Encompassing 212,672 hectares (525,300 acres), Te Urewera has the largest remaining forest in the North Island and is thus scenically compelling also including expansive lakes and impressive valleys. Along with the spectacular landscape, the area is laden with historical significance and was home for centuries to the Tuhoe people ('Children of the Mist'), ancestors of the celestial mist maiden, Hine-puhoku-rangi. Visitors may catch glimpses of unusual wildlife such as the kiwi, kaka (large forest parrot), falcon and whio (blue duck). The park has extensive hiking trails and its lakes are open for fishing and some water activities. Hunting of introduced animals (deer and pigs) is encouraged. Address: State Highway 38, Aniwaniwa Wairoa Gisborne New Zealand
